Book!

Kategória: English posts — akos @ 6:31 pm

I recently read through a book titled God’s debris, and it really does send you reeling. The book is a voyage through ideas, some true, some creative hogwash. It is rather short (about an hour or two long), but the author touches on diverse subjects (from metaphysics to cosmology to social tips) It’s definitely worth reading, and do so before you read further here. I’ll wait.

Lots of nice ideas in it, along with some a bit wacky. I think the old mans understanding of evolution is sadly simple, even if simple ideas were the authors intention. What a lot of people seem to mix up about evolution is that it isn’t just a lot of random changes, or even small random changes. It’s a lot of cumulative small random changes that matter.

Also, the thing about “if gravity were a tugging force, there would be friction and the moon would fall into the sun” is wrong, although a similar argument was used against the classical atom-model, where electrons circled around the positive core. The difference is that an electronically charged particle emits energy during acceleration (and circular movement has acceleration in it, even if the speed of the particle is constant), while (plain) matter does not emit energy during acceleration.

I love the reasoning behind God’s suicide, it harkens to a favorite hindu (I think) creation-myth of mine. Taking a longer look at it, it seems like a lot of the book is heavily influenced by hinduism, from the name of the old man (Avatar) to the concept that we are god’s debris.

I really like the way the old man looks at the world religions, I echo his view that religions are like maps of different routes to the same destination.
It was a fun read, and even if it doesnt leave a permanent mark on my thinking, I’m grateful for the “exercise” my brain got.

  1. If you like theological books, or theories on religious stuff…you should read one of Spongs book…cant remember his first name…but Spong is his surname…an american bishop who has gone thru the bible ,,,what might be true and not..and interpretations stuff like that the “Eye of a needle” was actually a narrow gate in old Jerusalem…..which might change the meaning of what Jesus actually meant and so on….
